Learn How to Remove Shingles Before Doing Any Roof Repair

There are many effective roof repairs you can do on your own, if you are handy with tools and have an extension ladder. You may need to replace just one sheet of shingles. In order to put in new ones, you have to remove the old ones. YouTube creator Gary Jones tells you how to remove the old shingles.

You’ll need a flat bar, a hammer, a pair of pliers, and a knife with a retractable blade.

Each shingle is usually part of a sheet of shingles. You have to remove the whole sheet to get the damaged shingle. Lift the shingle with the flat bar gently to see how they are connected to the roof. Usually, this is with roofing staples. Remove the staples by placing the flat bar under the staple and tapping with the hammer. When the staples are loosened, remove them with pliers.

Really damaged shingle sheets will come right off without the need to remove nails or staples. Some shingles you may have to cut out, which you would do with your utility knife.
